Latest abortion statistics from the Department of Health (England and Wales) and Scottish Health Statistics

  • Total number of abortions in 2006 was 214,254 as follows:
    • England and Wales
      • Residents 193,737
      • Non-residents 7,436
    • Scotland 13,081
  • Those who defend the 24-week abortion time limit frequently state that, “only 1.6% of abortions are performed after 20-weeks gestation.” In 2006, 2,996 babies were aborted after 20-weeks in England, Wales and Scotland.
  • In 2006, 2,216 babies were aborted for disability. Of these, 703 took place after 20 weeks in England and Wales including 567 between 20 and 24 weeks and 136 after 24 weeks (Post 20 and 24-week figures are not available for Scotland)
  • 97% of abortions in 2006 were performed under ground C of the Abortion Act, which is generally regarded as the ground under which social abortions are recorded.
